Reading
At Balboa Academy students in Grades K-4 have adopted Reading Street Common Core as a major component of the elementary Language Arts program. This reading program connects to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and supports reading, writing, and language development.
Reading Street provides students with weekly routines to help develop deep understanding and build higher-order thinking skills. The program provides teachers with an online platform. Since Reading Street spirals from grade to grade, our students are familiar with the daily/weekly routines that Reading Street has to offer. On a weekly basis, students’ reading activities integrate Science and Social Studies content, a weekly question, phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, high-frequency words, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, writing, and grammar.
Reading Street allows teachers to implement performance assessments to differentiate instruction day by day through teacher-led small groups, independent practice stations, and reading activities. There are literacy activities for students on all levels from beginner to advanced with a balance of both fiction and nonfiction titles. Reading Street offers an English Language Learning (ELL) component for ELL students to be exposed to the same weekly story and vocabulary to help ensure every student’s success.
